1/10/19 O&A NYC HEALTH AND FITNESS: The Dance Of The Village Elders Resume Classes Today

The Dance of The Village Elders will resume classes today, Thursday January 10th 2pm at St. Phillip’s Church (204 west 134th  Street). The 90-minutes class Thursday afternoon class incorporates stretching and breathing, calisthenics, aerobics and dance/choreography. The class is “senior specific” designed to encourage and aid each person reach their personal best.

More important Dance Of The Village Elders addresses the challenges associated with aging such as loss of motor skills, hand/eye coordination, short-term memory,  and mobility and balance issues. We change the emphasis and goals to accommodate the different concerns of the season. “This time of year, falling due to inclement weather become an issue, in addition to the joint pain attributed to cold weather,” says director Walter Rutledge. The classes are offered free to the public. This January will mark the beginning of our third winter/spring session at St. Phillips.

After a few weeks of getting back “in step” strength/resistance training will be added to the weekly dance and fitness regimen. The class will add resistance bands training, because it provides an efficient way to build and strengthen muscles without adding undue stressing the joints and ligaments.

For more information about the classes and related events and activities contact Walter Rutledge at (917) 744- 2601.
