Naomi Elaine Campbell, an English-born model, of African Jamaican descent and Chinese Jamaican ancestry through her paternal grandmother, who carried the family name Ming. Recruited at the age of 15, she established herself among the top three most recognizable and in-demand models of the late 1980s and the 1990s, and she was one of six models of her generation declared supermodels by the fashion world.

In December 1987, she appeared on the cover of British Vogue, as that publication’s first black cover girl since 1966. Naomi Campbell wore a shimmering gold Chanel coat. She later starred in eight other Vogue covers.

In August 1988 Naomi was the first black woman to appear on the cover of French Vogue. Her friend and mentor, designer Yves St. Laurent, threatened to withdraw his advertising from the magazine if it continued to refuse to place black models on its cover. In September 1991, she was the first black model on the cover of Time Magazine.

The Face is a reality television modeling competition. Hosted by Nigel Barker it premiered February 12, 2013, on Oxygen, with Naomi Campbell as Executive Producer. The Face follows three supermodel coaches as they compete with each other to find ‘the face’ of a make-up brand. While Naomi Campbell reappears in two seasons, Anne Vyalitsyna and Lydia Hearst replaced Coco Rocha and Karolina Kurkova as supermodel coaches for season two.

Campbell is now known around the world as one of the five original supermodels of the 80s and 90s, accompanied by Christy Turlington, Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, and Linda Evangelista.
