3/28/18 O&A NYC DANCE: Da’Von Doane- Living The Dream

By Walter Rutledge

The Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) begins their New York City season April 4th through 7th at New York City Center. The company will present a varied and diverse program including three New York premieres: George Balanchine’s Valse-Fantaisie, Harlem on My Mind by Darrell Grand Moultrie, and Christopher Wheeldon’s duet This Bitter Earth. The season highlight will be the much-anticipated return of Dougla by choreographer/Renaissance man Geoffrey Holder.

Da’Von Doane became a member the Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble in 2009. Over the next three years Doane continued to work toward his dream of dancing in a ballet company. In 2012 his dream became a reality with the return of the Dance Theatre of Harlem. Now in his sixth season with the company his persistence and dedication has distinguished him as the only remaining male dancer from that original group.

Named one of Dance Magazine’s Top 25 to watch in 2014, Doane continues to explore his artistry both as a dancer and emerging choreographer. His choreography has been presented by Periapsis Music and Dance, CUNY graduate program of Music and the Thelma Hill Performing Arts Center (New York City’s oldest continuous presenter of choreographers of color). In a recent conversation with O&A NYC Magazine Editor in Chief Walter Rutledge Da’Von discusses the upcoming season, his choreographic modus operandi and all things DTH.
