7/4/19 O&A NYC WHATS HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND: JULY 4- JULY 7, 2019

July 4th is the start of a four day summer holiday weekend and New York is just getting warmed up. We will have a hot dog eating contest at Coney Island and a seafood boil festival in Brooklyn. Tap dance in Chelsea and Afropop in Central Park. Not to mention a jazz brunch in Harlem. Here are a few of the many events happening in the city that never sleeps, guaranteed to keep you Out and About.

Nathan’s Famous 4th of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest 2019 at Nathan’s Famous Restaurant on Thursday July 4, 10am- 1pm 1310 Surf Avenue Corner of Stillwell Avenue, in the outdoor courtyard Brooklyn. The name says it all: Hearty eaters compete to see who can chow down on the most franks at this classic NYC summer event. Joey Chestnut consumed 74 hot dogs at last year’s annual contest; Miki Sudo won the women’s competition with 37.
Savion Glover at the Joyce Theater July 2 through July 7: Tony-Award winning artist Savion Glover brings his extraordinary musicality and footwork to The Joyce with the world premiere of Lady5 @ Savion Glover’s BaRoQUe’BLaK TaP CaFe. Tap into a mesmerizing interplay of rhapsodic rhythm and movement that celebrates a new era of tap performed with astounding virtuosity. 4th of July NYC Boat Macy’s Fireworks Cruise Independence Day on Thursday July 4th from 6 til 11pm at Pier 36 New York, 299 South Street-Liberty Belle Boat. Cruise the waters with spectacular New York City Skyline views. Dancing, drinking and eating under the beautiful sunset and finishing it off with The Macys Fireworks Show!

American Ballet Theater 2019 Spring Season, Through July 6, 2019, at Metropolitan Opera House: New Work Premiere of by Alexei Ratmansky and Company Premieres of Deuce Coupe by Twyla Tharp and Jane Eyre by Cathy Marston to Highlight ABT’s Also Roberto Bolle to give farewell performance with ABT on June 20 and Brooklyn Mack to Appear as Guest Artist.

Spider-Man: Far From Home: Peter Parker returns in Spider-Man: Far From Home, the next chapter of the Spider-Man: Homecoming series! Our friendly neighborhood Super Hero decides to join his best friends Ned, MJ, and the rest of the gang on a European vacation. However, Peter’s plan to leave super heroics behind for a few weeks are quickly scrapped when he begrudgingly agrees to help Nick Fury uncover the mystery of several elemental creature attacks, creating havoc across the continent! Now Playing

The 5th Annual Freedom Fest at Pier 15 East River Esplanade, 78 South St., New York on Thursday, July 4, from 6:45pm – 11pm. Celebrate your NYC July 4th with your family on Pier 15 and enjoy the annual Family Friendly Freedom Fest celebration! Coney Island is the place to be on the Fourth of July!  Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park*, Luna Park NYC*, and the New York Aquarium* are open all day.

Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks: At this year’s July 4th Macy’s Fireworks celebration, four fireworks barges will line up close to Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport, and will make the iconic Brooklyn Bridge the star of the show. The best Brooklyn neighborhoods to get a great view include Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO.

Stardust VII : Vado Mori, 150 Greenpoint Ave. Brooklyn on July 4 from 4pm- 4am is the 7th installment of the Stardust Underground Series taking place in New York City since 2011. This year’s edition will take place between July 4 and 5th, featuring twenty bands. The July 4th Lineup includes: Dispirit, Ruin Lust, One Master, Wolvhammer, Anicon, Luminous Vault, Funeral Leech.

Burlesque Night Out’s Big July 4th Celebration at Music at the City Winery, 155 Varick Street, Thursday July 4 at 7pm. An explosive evening of striptease and spectacle more fantastic than a sky full of fireworks! The pyrotechnics start indoors as our most innovative performers take to the stage for a show that will dazzle the eyes and senses. Join us early and then head out into the city to watch the fireworks.

Jazzmobile, Inc to Launch Residency at Minton’s Playhouse, 206 West 118th Street, in Harlem, July 4. The opening celebration on July 4 will have a set time of 7:30 – 8:30 pm; at 9:00 pm, jazz fans will be able to watch the fireworks via large-screen television. The second and final set will be from 9:30 – 10:30 pm. (will start after the fireworks).  This open-ended residency will begin on Independence Day with pianist Nat Adderly, Jr., and will continue every Thursday evening with a world-class jazz band. The Summer lineup will be announced at the opening celebration on July 4.

Skin In The Game: Abducted off the sidewalk of suburban America, fifteen year old Dani (Sammi Hanratty) finds herself submerged in the horrific underground world of human trafficking. With no initial assistance from the police, Dani’s mother (Elisabeth Harnois) and an ex-prostitute (Erica Ash) take to the streets in an effort to find her before it is too late. First time director Adisa takes viewers on an intense journey of a horrific underground world and introduces us to characters from both sides of the street, some who survive… and others who are not so lucky. Opens July 5

Chris Kaz: The Parlor Session July 5, 8- 9:30pm at the Langston Hughes House 20 East 127th Street, New York. Born and raised in London, half Greek Cypriot and half German Sri Lankan, Chris Kaz is preparing to follow up the release of his “Save Us” single with not one, but two releases. The first is a collaborative EP with Brooklyn-based producer The 83rd called Sleeping Fires (from which “Save Us” is taken), and the second is the remix package to accompany “Save Us”.

Coney Island Friday Night Fireworks between West 10th Street and West 15th Street on Friday, July 5, 2019, 9:30–10pm. Light up your Friday nights by joining us for a FREE spectacular fireworks show that lights up the Coney Island skyline every Friday night (weather permitting) from June 21 through August 30! For the best viewing, visitors are welcomed anywhere in the Amusement District down to the beach and boardwalk.

FrankieFridays is Brooklyn’s best kept  house music secret! The party takes place every Friday at The Happiness Lounge, 1458 St. Johns Place (bet. Utica Avenue and Rochester Avenue).  The party rocks the best dance classics and soulful house music masterfully mixed by New York City’s own DJ Frankie Paradise. 8–10 pm Garry Winogrand: All Things Are Photographable -(Sasha Waters Freyer, 2018, 90 min.) tells Winogrand’s story through interviews with curators and contemporaries, plus images from the thousands of undeveloped rolls of film discovered after his death. 8:30–9:30 pm COMMUNITY TALK: LESBIAN HERSTORY ARCHIVES– Flavia Rando, Shawn(ta) Smith-Cruz, Ashley-Luisa Santangelo, and Elvis Bakaitis, of the Lesbian Herstory Archives, discuss the challenges of portraying lesbian lives and activism while showcasing the power of the LGBTQ+ rights movement. Seating is limited and first come, first served.

9–10 pm MUSIC: CUMBIA RIVER BAND-Dance and celebrate as Cumbia River Band plays music drawn from a festive repertoire of Colombian cumbia and riverside music.

SUMMER THUNDER! with JOE BATAAN, Sunday, July 7, 2pm, at Union Pool 484 Union Ave Brooklyn. Born of African-American/Filipino parents, Joe Bataan grew up in Spanish Harlem, where he ran with neighborhood gangs and absorbed R&B, Afro-Cuban and Afro-Rican influences. Self taught on the piano, he organized his first band in 1965 and since that time has been entertaining audiences around the world. Joe still continues to captivate audiences all over the world, but it is in “El Barrio” in Spanish Harlem where he comes from that gives him his foundation. Much like Sun Ra Arkestra, Latin soul king Joe Bataan can fill much much bigger spaces than Union Pool’s backyard patio, but he plays their free Summer Thunder series every year and it’s a total party.

Summerstage 2019- Abou Combo/ Lakou Mizik/ DJ Sabine Blaizin Sunday, July 7, 6pm- 9pm Springfield Park Queens, NY. Tabou Combo was founded in Petion-Ville by the Chancy brothers in late-1960s Haiti, but the self-proclaimed “ambassadors of konpa” have taken their style of Haitian dance music around the world since their move to Brooklyn in 1971. The orchestra, whom are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, borrows the repetition and breaks of Afro-American gospel, while incorporating African soukous and American funk with French colonial kontradans and quadrilles. They’re supported by Lakou Mizik, a multi-generational Port-au-Prince collective that celebrates the African, French, American, and Pan-Caribbean influences that collide in Haiti. Free event

Summerstage 2019- Mr Eazi/ Efya/ Blinky Bill/ DJ Mohgany Sunday, July 7,  6pm – 10pm (Doors open 5:00 pm) SummerStage, Central Park Rumsey Playfield, Manhattan. Mr Eazi describes his laid-back bops as his pioneering Banku music—named after the heavy Ghanian comfort food—and while the Afropop artist makes soundtracks for good times, he also represents the cultural exchange between African neighbors Nigeria and Ghana. Born in the former and educated in the latter, the recent Mad Decent signee often touches on themes of migration, and can be seen on the cover of his 2017 mixtape Life Is Eazi, Vol. 1 – Accra To Lagos in a suit tailored in the fashion of a Ghana Must Go bag, a symbol of the link between the two countries.
