7/10/17 O&A NYC OUT AND ABOUT: PICKS OF THE WEEK- What’s Happening This Week July 10- July 17, 2017

Summer is here and the city is abounding with activity “24- 7- 365”. We have art celebrating popular culture in Brooklyn. Dance honoring dancers downtown. Blockbuster and Indie film share the silver screen, music blends with movement to reflect on Asian culture at Carnegie Hall, and the swashbuckling continues in Harlem. Here are a few of the many events happening in the city that never sleeps guaranteed to keep you Out and About.

The Rise of Sneaker Culture, at the Brooklyn Museum July 10th through October 3, chronicles their modest origins in the mid-nineteenth century to high-end sneakers created in the past decade, sneakers have become a global obsession. The Rise of Sneaker Culture is the first exhibition to explore the complex social history and cultural significance of the footwear now worn by billions of people throughout the world.

The exhibition, which includes approximately 150 pairs of sneakers, looks at the evolution of the sneaker from its beginnings to its current role as status symbol and urban icon. Included are works from the archives of manufacturers such as Adidas, Converse, Nike, Puma, and Reebok as well as private collectors such as hip-hop legend Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, sneaker guru Bobbito Garcia, and Dee Wells of Obsessive Sneaker Disorder.

For her solo exhibition Lynette Yiadom-Boakye: Under-Song For A Cipher at the New Museum (235 Bowery Street), Yiadom-Boakye has created seventeen new works and conceived of a painted environment specific to the Fourth Floor Gallery. In her lush oil paintings, British artist Yiadom-Boakye, a 2013 Turner Prize finalist and one of the most renowned painters of her generation, conjures elegant figures that appear both quotidian and otherworldly. The exhibit runs through September 3, 2017.

2017 Bessie Awards Cocktail Party and Press Conference: The Bessies Steering Committee invites you to celebrate New York’s dance artists as we announce this year’s nominees of the 2017 New York Dance and Performance Bessie Awards on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at Gibney Dance: Agnes Varis Performing Arts Center at 280 Broadway 280 Broadway- Studio H.

Also the 2017 Juried Bessie Award and the 2017 Bessie Award for Outstanding Emerging Choreographer will be presented. Join us at 5pm for hors d’oeuvres, libations and special guest performances. At 6pm we will announce nominees and present awards.

Spider-man Homecoming: A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging superhero in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

High-school superhero Peter Parker (Tom Holland) aspires to join the Avengers in his guise as Spider-Man, but teenage woes and Tony Stark’s contradictory mentorship only complicate his ambitions. Robert Downey Jr., Marisa Tomei, and Michael Keaton co-star.

Our Time Will Come: Fang Lan (Zhou Xun) and her mother are trying to live out this difficult period in a small run-down flat in 1941 Wanchai. After the schools are shut down, Lan unwittingly finds herself embroiled in the guerillas’ mission to save novelist Mao Dun.

Our Time Will Come:

Hanabi at Weill Hall, Carnegie Hall on July 17, 8pm: meaning firework in Japanese, plays an integral role in Japan’s history and summer season. This performance draws inspiration from hanabi and aims to reflect its experience through dance and music. Performers include Tomoe Sasano (Koto), Hikaru Hada (Shinobue), Naoto Oka (Laptop), Jeremy Smith (Percussion); dancer and vocalist Kae Kurachi and dancers Yuki Ishiguro, Vivake Khamsingsavath, Ayaka Taniguchi, and Takeshi Ohashi. 

Classical Theatre of Harlem’s The Three Musketeers in Marcus Garvey Park, July 7 through July 30 (Tuesday-Sunday 8pm and Friday 8:30pm). The Classical Theatre of Harlem, led by Ty Jones, presents Catherine Bush’s stage version of the much-adapted 1844 novel by the great French (and black) writer Alexandre Dumas père

Classical Theatre of Harlem’s The Three Musketeers

Jenny Bennett directs the free outdoor production, with choreography by Tiffany Rea-Fisher and fight choreography by Manny Brown. In a plot twist the lead role of D’Artagnan is portrayed by a woman, Miriam Hyman, who seeks to become a fourth member of the sword-happy titular trio.

Death of a Salesman at BAM Fisher Fishman Space- July 14 through July 23. Held hostage by its past, a family grapples with failure, worth, and a world closing in around them. In this hyper-theatrical production from Theater Mitu, human beings become objects, music carries the memory of days long gone, and a life is reduced to a mortgage. This unique staging of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman explores a landscape of unrealized hopes and asks what happens when you are written out of the American Dream.

Amateur Night At The Apollo: Show Off on Wednesday, July 12 at 7:30pm. The winners of recent Amateur Night shows come together to SHOW OFF their talent and compete for the chance to move on to the Top Dog semi-finals on August 16, and maybe even win the title of Super Top Dog and the cash prizes of $5,000 in the Child Star category and $20,000 in the Adult category on November 22.
