Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (2011) was The Royal Ballet’s first new full-length work since 1995. The works developed theme, sumptuous costumes and sets and focused choreography received approval from both audiences and critics. This excerpt is another example of The Royal Ballet’s soloist Eric Underwood’s technical versatility and artistic virtuosity. His performance as the playfully seductive Caterpillar epitomizes an artist in total control of his craft (and vicariously recalls my own days savoring “special” mushrooms). Eric Underwood is a Soloist with The Royal Ballet. He was born in Washington, D.C., and trained locally under the direction of Barbara Marks. After only eight months (there were no other boys at the school) Eric moved to the School of American Ballet in New York. Continue reading
