If you had planned on seeing the annual New York City season of Ailey II, March 17 through 22 at the Joyce Theater don’t walk to get your tickets- run! The company’s first independent season at the Joyce has caught fire and the season could be sold out prior to opening night. “We couldn’t be more excited to present our first full season at The Joyce Theater,” says Ailey II Artistic Director Troy Powell.
Ailey II will present two programs and 8 performances by emerging and established choreographers. Program A will offer three works including a company and world premiere. Dwight Rhoden’s 2006 contemporary ballet Hissy Fits set to J.S. Bach makes its company debut. The much-anticipated world premiere of Manuel Vignoulle’s full-company work Breakthrough is set to the music by Swedish composer Mikael Karlsson. The 2013 Virtues by Amy Hall Garner completes the program roster.
Program B will be an evening of returning favorites including Powell’s 2007 The External Knot, and from 2013 Katarzyna Skarpetowska’s Cuore Sott’olio and Wings by Jennifer Archibald. “In the past, Ailey II participated in the 1.2.3. Festival with two other second companies, but having our own season will be a pivotal moment,” continues Powell. “In recent years, we have been working to redefine what it means to be a second company, and I am confident that hometown audiences will be blown away by the passion and performance quality of my dancers.”
