4/13/21 O&A NYC INSPIRATIONAL TUESDAY: Universal Hip Hop Museum Will Honor DMX

The Universal Hip Hop Museum  plans to create a collection and archive that will honor the late iconic rapper DMX. The museum will be located in the Mott Haven neighborhood, and is scheduled to open in 2024. The birthplace of hip-hop is the Boogie Down Bronx; it only seems right that a museum to honor the music and everything about it will be built there.

DMX had suffered a heart attack a week earlier reportedly from an alleged drug overdose on April 2nd. The 50 year old Mount Vernon, N.Y. native was described as being in grave condition at a White Plains, New York, hospital. The rapper unfortunately passed away on April 9th. “If Tupac was the heart of hip-hop, DMX was the soul. DMX was that realness, that grittiness, he didn’t create the grittiness of DMX to rap — that’s who he was,” Chief Curator Paradise Gray, who says X was also a talented poet and actor.

The New York City Universal Hip-hop Museum (UHHM) is slated to open in 2022 in the Bronx. Founded by Rocky Bucano, Kurtis Blow, Shawn LG Thomas, Grandwizzard Theodore, Mickey Bentson, and , Joe Conzo Jr. the museum “celebrates and preserves the history of local and global hip-hop music and culture to inspire, empower, and promote understanding,” according to the UHHM website.
