4/12/17 O&A NYC EVENT: Brooklyn Museum Honors Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz

By Walter Rutledge and Adewale Adekanbi

On Monday April 3rd the Brooklyn Museum held its annual Brooklyn Artists Ball. The event celebrates Brooklyn’s creative community and supports the institution’s many year-round programs; and is also the largest annual fundraising gala at the Brooklyn Museum. This year’s event honored singer/songwriters and husband and wife Alicia Keys and Kasseem “Swizz Beatz” Dean.

The evening transformed the main level atrium and courtyard into cocktail lounge and gathering space. David Stark Designs used the theme of “Beyond” and guests were encouraged to wear blue, acknowledging the Museum’s current exhibition Infinite Blue. Artist Swoon’s beloved Pearly’s Beauty Shop was reimagined to use the “faux” salon with Swoon fashioning specially created hairpieces for the guests. A body-painting artist assisted Swoon by applying designs to the faces of partygoers throughout the night.

Luminaries including Lenny Kravitz, David Byrne, LaLa and Carmelo Anthony, Janet Mock, Sandra Bernhard, Fred (Fab 5 Freddy) Brathwaite, David Byrne, Sarah Jones, and Maxwell joined in the dinner celebration. Following dinner guests received an after dinner workout courtesy of dance party host artist KAWS and Swizz Beatz, featuring music by DJ Runna. Guests were also given the opportunity to acquire limited edition prints created by select The Dean Collection artists—Derrick Adams, Todd James and Nathaniel Mary Quinn.
