4/3/17 O&A NYC REVIEW MUSIC: Bobbi Humphrey’s Homemade Jam In Harlem

By Walter Rutledge

Bobbi Humphrey performed two sold out shows on March 25 at Red Rooster’s Ginny’s Supper Club.

The concert entitled Bobbi Humphrey’s Homemade Jam In Harlem (named after the 1978 single Home Made Jam on her album Freestyle) displayed both Humphrey’s ability and artistry. Humphrey masterfully turned the intimate supper club setting into a friendly family affair. The evening’s energy and spirit recalled Harlem’s bygone jazz era.

The 60-minute jam session featured renditions of original jazz compositions and R&B covers exemplifying Humphrey’s eclectic and singular style. From the up-tempo opening Coming Home Baby, to the introspective and melodic Hello, to her signature closer Harlem River Drive Humphrey combined music and vocals (including scats) to charm the enthusiast audience. Accompanied by a tight trio consisting of Andre Sims (keyboards), Aaron king (bass) and Leonard Covington (drums) assisted her “work” the crowd.

Whether you are a jazz aficionado or music novice Humphrey, the consummate professional, came to please. The physically diminutive flutist, who playfully brags about being taller than her friend Stephanie Mills, brings her talent front and center with colossal fervor. Humphrey’s amalgam of melodious and lyric passages coupled with her strong syncopation and improvisational prowess is delivered with the attack of a music lioness.

Humphrey acknowledges that Ginny’s Supper Club has become her favorite, and preferred uptown performance venue. This latest concert series is her second standing room only engagement at Ginny’s during the 2017 winter season. If you missed Bobbi Humphrey’s Homemade Jam In Harlem we are sure the success of the concerts will hasten her Harlem return.
