5/30/18 O&A NYC DANCE: Pascal Rioult- The Craft of Choreography

By Walter Rutledge

RIOULT Dance NY begins the New York City season on Wednesday, May 30 thru Sunday, June 2 at the Joyce Theater (175 Eighth Avenue, at 19th Street, NYC). The company will present Written for Dance an evening by founder/choreographer Pascal Rioult that celebrates the historic connection and collaborative power of the choreographer and composer. Written for Dance is inspired by the music of Russian composers representing three distinct musical periods – the romantic, the neo-classic, and the contemporary.

The five-day, seven performances season will feature two revivals and a world premiere. Dream Suite, (2014) a contemporary take on romanticism set to Tchaikovsky’s Orchestral Suite No. 2 in C Major.  Les Noces, (2005) a sexually charged deconstruction of the marriage ritual danced to Stravinsky’s iconic score of the same name. Nostalghia, much-anticipated new work by Rioult is set to a commissioned score by Polina Nazaykinskaya and will be performed live.

Pascal Rioult- The Craft of Choreography

One of the most striking elements of Rioult’s choreography is his uncanny musicality. This consummate artist/craftsman speaks in a clear and articulate choreographic voice. O&A NYC had the opportunity to talk to Rioult about the craft of choreography and his personal artistic process.
