Each choreographer brings a unique individualism to the series. Jonathan Breton’s solo is inspired by nature and its complexities, and the other solo presented by Bree Nasby investigates how tension and suspension build and dissolve. Collaborators Ashley Carter and Vanessa Martinez de Banos address society’s mistrust of variance form the norm, while Janice Rosario’s “Unlea(she)d” explores how women find anguish and strength in their identity. Hannah Cohen has created a duet “Genesis,” which, through movement, explores word as material.

Over the series’ 21 year history newsteps has presented over 250 new and emerging  artists. They are selected through an open audition by a panel of dance leaders including H.T. Chen, Sarah Skaggs and Walter Rutledge. Each choreographer receive feedback from the panelists, a rehearsal space grant, an honorarium, and one on one mentoring with an adviser. The process culminates in three public performances at the Center.

The Thursday night performance will feature a post-performance Meet the Artist Reception. On Friday night there will be a post-performance discussion. Tickets are $12; $10 for students & seniors and make reservations at 212-349-0438 or info@chendancecenter.org.
