Jamal Rashann Callender has been a member of Ballet Hispanico since 2010. He was part of the new wave of dancers recruited at the start of Artistic Director Eduardo Vilaro incumbency. Over the past three seasons Callender has distinguished himself with the company. His clean execution, artistic commitment to the roles, and fashion model good looks have made him a company standout.
In the 2014 Ballet Hispanico Joyce Theater season, April 15 – 27, Callender will be featured in two Joyce premieres and a world premiere. These works include A Verme, a passionate duet by Edwaard Liang, Hogar, an exploration of immigrant identity and the meaning of home by Artistic Director Vilaro, and the world premiere of Gustavo Ramirez Sansano’s look at the nuances of a kiss entitled El Beso. We had an opportunity to talk to the 2012 Princess Grace Dance Performance Fellowship recipient prior to the Joyce season.
