Memorial Service For Mary Anthony

A memorial service will be held for modern dance pioneer Mary Anthony on Sunday July 13, 2:30pm at Judson Memorial Church, 55 Washington Square South. The afternoon will consist of the service (2:30-3:30pm),  remembrances of Anthony (3:30-4pm and a reception (4-5pm). The memorial will include performances of three solos choreographed by Anthony, and a video of her life in dance. After the prepared ceremony, visitors will be invited to speak briefly about Mary Anthony, her work, and her impact on them individually.

Anthony died in her dance studio home in the East Village in New York City on May 31, 2014 at the age of 97. She was recognized as one of the leaders of the modern dance movement for her choreography and teaching. She received countless accolades, citations and awards including the 2004 recipient of the Bessie Award for lifetime contribution to the field of modern dance, the Martha Hill Award in 2006, and the Joy Ann Dewey Beinecke’s Balasaraswati Award from American Dance Festival. In 2011 she received a citation from New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer at her 95th birthday, declaring November 11 as Mary Anthony Day.
