Ronald K. Brown and Evidence, A Dance Company will celebrate the 30 anniversary of the company February 24 through March 1, 2015 at the Joyce Theater. Brown realized his gift as a choreographer and his desire to express him by making dances at the beginning of his dance career. At age 19, when most dance artists are concentrating on performing, Brown formed Evidence.
Over the last three decades Brown has taken his initial downtown abstractionist experiences and cultivated them into a cohesive amalgam of West African, urban social dance vernacular and Eurocentric contemporary dance forms. The result is a signature look that has become the trademark of both Brown and the company. Homebased at The Center for Arts & Culture located in Brooklyn’s Restoration Plaza he has remains an artistic fixture in the neighborhood he grow up in.
We meet with Brown at his offices in The Center for Arts & Culture to discuss his career and his art prior to the 2015 New York City season. In this first part of our talk we discuss his early influences, the emergence of his style and choreographic philosophy.
