Bert Williams and Company, a film event at the Museum Of Modern Art, features the Museum’s celebrated restoration of the black-cast 1913 feature Lime Kiln Club Field Day. The Get Down, Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming Netflix musical series, have many drawing comparisons to HBO’s Vinyl, FOX’s Empire and of course West Side Story. Insiders are saying that its saving grace is that it doesn’t look like is a Baz Luhrmann production! The director has always had a keen eye and a sharp ear for musical numbers, but, recently, his taste for spectacle has tended to overshadow the Luhrmann touch that made a small film like Strictly Ballroom so charming. Pas de Quatre, originally choreographed by Jules Perrot in 1846 to music by Cesare Pugni, caused a sensation with both critics and public at its London premiere in 1847. One reason for its success was that it brought together four of the greatest ballerinas of the time. In order of appearance in the work, the ballerinas were Lucile Grahn, Carlotta Grisi, Fanny Cerrito, and Marie Taglioni, with this order being according to age.
