Wanda Sykes is a writer, comedian, actress, and voice artist. She earned the 1999 Emmy Award for her writing on The Chris Rock Show. In 2004, Entertainment Weekly named Sykes as one of the 25 funniest people in America. All in the Family is a sitcom that was originally broadcast on the CBS television network from January 12, 1971, to April 8, 1979. The show revolves around the life of a working class bigot and his family. Produced by Norman Lear and Bud Yorkin the series starred Carroll O’Connor, Jean Stapleton, Rob Reiner, and Sally Struthers.
The show broke ground in its depiction of issues previously considered unsuitable for U.S. network television comedy. Themes such as racism, homosexuality, women’s liberation, rape, miscarriage, abortion, breast cancer, the Vietnam War, menopause, and impotence. Through depicting these controversial issues, the series became arguably one of television’s most influential comedic programs, as it injected the sitcom format with more realistic and topical conflicts. 11/12/14 O&A Wildin Out Wednesday: Abbott & Costello- The Niagara Fall Sketch (“Slowly I Turned”)
The skit, which was well known on the vaudeville circuit, goes something like this: A bedraggled man buttonholes a stranger and tells him a tale of betrayal and vengeance. A rogue seduced his sweetheart. He trailed the miscreant from town to town, finally catching up with him in Niagara Falls, where he pummeled him mercilessly. The hearer of the story haplessly says the magic words, “Niagara Falls,” causing the man to turn on him and mete out the same punishment. Continue reading
10/22/14 O&A Wildin Out Wednesday: Homey D. Clown
Homey D. Clown – Damon Wayans plays an ex-con who works as a clown (real name Herman Simpson) for his parole agreement. Homey lashes out at anyone (usually by hitting them on the head with a sock full of pennies) who attempts to make him perform the standard antics of the role – “I don’t think so… Homey don’t play dat!”. His goal in life is to get even with “The Man”, a personification of the white males that are “holding him down”.
Near the end of most sketches, Homey would lead a group of children (played by the cast members) in a call and response sing-along. This would end with him degenerating into a rant, then intimidating the children into repeating after him. Homey was also the first, and only, In Living Color character to get his own video game. Eric Marlon Bishop known professionally as Jamie Foxx, is an African-American actor, singer-songwriter, stand-up comedian and musician. Ugly Wanda, played by Foxx, was based on a character LaWanda Page played in a sketch on Redd Foxx (1977). The first sketch to feature Wanda, in which she gives an erotic massage to a man who hasn’t seen her face, is a remake of the original Redd Foxx sketch. The character was named after Page. Jamie took his stage name as a tribute to Redd Foxx. Continue reading
9/10/14 O&A Wildin Out Wednesday: Eddie Murphy – Raw
Before films such as Tower Heist, Meet Dave, Holy Man and Daddy Day Care comedian turned actor Eddie Murphy use to be funny. A native of the Bushwick section of Brooklyn Murphy’s early comedy was characterized by profanity laced punch lines, and sketches lampooning a diverse group of people. At age 19 he became the youngest member of the Saturday Night Live cast. From 1980 through 1984 Eddie helped resurrect the show with characters including Gumby, Buckwheat and Mr. Robinson (a spoof on Fred Rogers).
Murphy released Raw in 1987. It followed the success of Delirious, the 1983 film of his stand-up comedy routine. Filmed in the Felt Forum, Madison Square Garden in New York, the film contained the word fuck 223 times, setting the record for the highest fuck count ever in a feature-length film. Raw surprisingly surpassed the 1983 Scarface with itself profanity and held this record until 1990. Continue reading
8/27/14 Wildin Out Wednesday: Robin Williams
In 2008 Robin Williams performed at the Wimbledon Theatre. It was a charity performance in support of Prince Charles’ organization, The Prince’s Trust. Recently Prince Charles became the first British royal to publicly pay tribute Williams, after the late actor’s death. In a statement to Press Association Charles said, “I greatly enjoyed meeting him on several occasions and his irreplaceable contribution to life will be greatly missed by countless people, including myself.” He added: “He was a remarkable man, whose wonderful frenetic humour brought a special kind of laughter into people’s lives.”
