Tennis goddess Serena Williams, 34, is ending 2015 with an impressive resume. This year alone she completed her second “Serena Slam,” released her new HSN statement collection at New York Fashion Week, showed off her incredible strength and beauty by posing (almost) nude in Pirelli’s 2016 calendar and, on Tuesday, December 15, awarded the high honor of becoming Sports Illustrated’s 2015 Sportsperson of the Year. Williams, the first solo female athlete to win the award in thirty-two years (since 1983), gave a moving acceptance speech encouraging female athletes everywhere to push their limits and be the “best you can be.”  Continue reading

12/21/15 O&A NYC With WaleStylez- Fashion: Kith Launches First Women’s Store and Store

It about time! Kith launched its first women’s collection. The new women’s store is roughly 400 square feet and features a minimalist aesthetic, with a herringbone white Carrera marble floor and mirrors covering the left and right walls. The new space also boasts a fully marble dumbwaiter, placed in the middle of the store’s floor, which is used to retrieve stock for customers. Products are brought up on a marble tray from beneath the floor and into a glass case and then handed to the customer. Continue reading

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater gave a cautious debut performance of Paul Taylor’s tango infused Piazzolla Caldera, but now the Company has thrown caution to the wind. Set in a milonga (tango dance hall) this rich dance theatre work allowed the Ailey Company to really flex their dramatic muscle. Piazzolla Caldera has become the highlight of the 2015 New York City Center season showcasing the Ailey Company at their sultry best.  Continue reading

12/20/15 O&A NYC Sunday Afternoon Jazz Concert: Thelonious Monk- Live in Norway and Denmark 1966

Thelonious Monk Quartet featuring Charlie Rouse (tenor sax), Larry Gales (double bass) and Ben Riley (drums) play two sets running about half an hour each, filmed in black-and-white in TV studios without an audience. The first set was done in Norway in 1966, the other in Denmark the same year.

Because of the double sessions we get two versions of Lulu’s Back In Town (but they are equally interesting). Featured also are Blue Monk, Don’t Blame Me (piano only on this one), Epistrophy and Round Midnight

Escape the cyber discount holiday shopping and remakes of remakes of Bing Crosby films; instead stretching your eyes and mind at Invisible Exports Gallery, 89 Eldridge Street (not far from the New Museum on Bowery Street). The exhibit is titled, Come On Daughter, Save Your Mother the work of Vaginal Davis (also known as Dr. Vaginal Creme Davis). Vaginal is homo-core punk, bi-lingual, bi-racial performance intersex singer cum artist and for almost ten years has lived, worked, taught and lectured in Berlin Germany. She has made art and music since the early 1980’s; Vaginal has adopted many personas– Clarence-a white supremacist rocker, Graziela Grejalva to aging deviant, John Dean Egg III and a singer in Afro Sisters. This is not your mother’s white Christmas, nor is the art. Continue reading
