Alvin Ailey’s collaboration with jazz pianist and composer Mary Lou Williams, two artists who shared roots and memories in the southern church, is a deeply spirited theatrical experience.
The work showcases Mr. Ailey’s dynamic Horton-inspired choreography and Ms. Williams’ soulful and uplifting mass — Music for Peace. This celebration of jazz and gospel is a full company work and was performed in its entirety for the first time in over 35 years during the 2010 Ailey season on the centennial of Ms. Williams’ birth.
Mary Lou’s Mass- Ailey
Keep your eye on Renee Robinson. In 2010 she was the only remaining company member to have actually worked with choreographer/company founder Alvin Ailey. Her tenure, 1981- 2012, was the longest of any female dancer in Ailey company history. Robinson’s approach/attack to the Horton technique has a different (and most honest) quality, a direct influence of founder Alvin Ailey.
