10/7/16 O&A NYC SHALL WE DANCE FRIDAY: Nureyev & The Joffrey Ballet Tribute to Nijinsky 1980
Nureyev & The Joffrey Ballet Tribute to Nijinsky, features three ballets Petrouchka, Le spectre de la rose, L’après-midi d’un faune was recorded on August 1980 in Nashville.
As Robert Joffrey, artistic director of the company, explains toward the end of this program, no one really knows in precise detail how the Vaslav Nijinsky of legend danced. These re-creations were assembled by reading about him and by looking at photographs in costume. Needless to say, dance scholars have been afforded endless opportunity for taking indignant exception to bits and pieces of the reconstructions.

Fancy Free, a ballet choreographed by Jerome for Ballet Theatre, the predecessor of American Ballet Theatre. Set to a score by Leonard Bernstein, with scenery by Oliver Smith, costumes by Kermit Love and lighting by Ronald Bates. The premiere took place on Tuesday, April 18th, 1944, at the original Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. The sailors were played by Jerome Robbins, Michael Kidd, and John Kriza. BattleFest League Extreme Street Dancing came from the gritty streets of Brooklyn (that’s the gritty streets before gentrification). The style is part structured dance, improvisation, contortion and acrobatics, while remaining 100% testosterone charged. BattleFest is a dance battle sports leagues for extreme street dancers.

Gregory and Maurice Hines, Harlem natives and child entertainers were the sons of Alma Iola (Lawless) and Maurice Robert Hines, a dancer, musician, and actor. Maurice began his career at the age of five and Gregory at age two. Both studied tap dance at the Henry LeTang Dance Studio in Manhattan. LeTang recognized their talent and began choreographing numbers specifically for them patterned on the Nicholas Brothers. Continue reading

Scheherazade premiered on June 4, 1910, at the Opéra Garnier in Paris by the Ballets Russes. The choreography for the ballet was by Michel Fokine and the libretto was from Fokine and Léon Bakst. This ballet provoked exoticism by showing a masculine Golden Slave seducing Zobeide who is one of the many wives of the Shah. Continue reading
