As Silva’s potential became evident she realized that there was little opportunity for a dark-skinned classical dancer in Brazil. 4/1/18 O&A NYC DANCE- GOSPEL SUNDAY EXTRA: I Wanna Be Ready- Matthew Rushing

On March 30, 1958, the dancer and choreographer Alvin Ailey (1931-1989) launched his company, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, at a performance in New York City that forever changed the face of American dance. He was 27 years old.

In honor of the Company’s 60th anniversary, Matthew Rushing – a 25-year veteran of the Ailey company — performed the iconic solo “I Wanna Be Ready” from Mr. Ailey’s classic work, Revelations. Filmed in Rogers, Texas, where Mr. Ailey was born and lived as a young child, Mr. Rushing’s performance features live accompaniment by five local singers.

John Levell Starks  professional basketball shooting guards. John Starks was listed at 6’2 and 190 lb during his NBA playing career. Although he was not drafted in the 1988 NBA draft after attending four colleges in his hometown Oklahoma, including Oklahoma State University, he gained fame while playing for the NewYork Knicks of the National Basketball Association in the 1990s. The Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) begins their New York City season April 4th through 7th at New York City Center. The company will present a varied and diverse program including three New York premieres: George Balanchine’s Valse-Fantaisie, Harlem on My Mind by Darrell Grand Moultrie, and Christopher Wheeldon’s duet This Bitter Earth.
